MY STORY – Living with Lyme Disease
I’m not sure what year this all started for me. Lyme disease was something I wasn’t aware of in the 80’s. I don’t remember getting bitten by a tick, but most people don’t. Only 30-40% of victims will get the bull’s eye rash. If you get the rash, then yes, you have Lyme disease. Even if you don’t get the rash or bull’s eye, you may still have been infected.
I was lead to believe you had to be in the woods, or a hunter to be infected. Yes, I did live in the woods and I did go deer hunting. Unfortunately, you can get Lyme disease in your back yard or walking under a tree in the city too.
If your immune system is strong enough the symptoms can stay dormant inside you for years until something happens to suppress your immune system. I think my illness started with a stressful event in 1992. A funnel cloud came though our subdivision and drove tree limbs, like flying spikes, into the roof of our house. Our windows shattered from the impact of the tree limbs. The most traumatic part was my family was home at that time. How Jim closed the basement door, seconds before the windows were blown out was a mystery/miracle??? This was a true gift that potentially saved our lives.
Was it the emotional trauma of that day that triggered my immune system to dive and the spirochetes of Lyme Disease to thrive?
Sometime after the funnel cloud trauma, I started noticing that I was experiencing allergic reactions to many things from foods to weeds; as well as frequent insomnia, joint pain, nerve pain, fatigue, and heart issues. I had some degree of all these things before that event, but now the symptoms were running in full force, interfering will daily living. Then I noticed intense brain fog; my brain would cut out in mid conversation, and I couldn’t complete my sentences – I couldn’t find the words. I thought I was nuts.
Around 2001 I had seen a holistic doctor in Madison, Wisconsin for my allergies. Following numerous visits with him, I was told I had Lyme disease. At the time I’d never heard of it.
Thinking I should see my “regular” doctor to confirm the diagnosis and find out what was next, I made and appointment. He ran the Western blot test and it came back negative. That left me not knowing what to believe. Did I have Lyme disease or not?.
Over the next 6 years, I saw many more doctors, took 5 Western blot tests with negative results, and was treated with 6 separate surgeries without a “medical” diagnosis of Lyme disease. My doctors did their best, but only treated my painful symptoms, without success.
I finally found a doctor that dealt with Lyme disease. He sent my blood to a lab with a powerful enough microscope and could count the spirochetes. As a result, this test came back positive.
I can’t say I was happy to officially have this diagnosis, and I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, but I’m glad to know what’s wrong. I knew I was sick and many people, including some doctors, made me feel it was all in my head. Many people tell you that you look good but that’s not how I felt. And they wonder why people get depressed. I feel I am a strong willed person, and Lyme disease leaves you with no will.
(Still recovering from my last surgery December 2007.)
This was my darkest time and lowest point. I’m not sure what was keeping me alive. I remember praying God would take me home; I was not living (physically or mentally).
I found my recovery in an unexpected place. The next 3 years (Jan. 2008) of my life I was blessed with a Doctor who specialized in Lyme which included lots of nutritional supplements for rebuilding my immune system and antibiotics.
January 2011my concern was how long would I have to continue fighting this disease. I know I was infected 15-20 years before being treated and had to come to terms with the fact that I may continue to have Lyme disease despite treatment. The good news is that there are effective therapies for living with Lyme disease; and living well!
I’ve learned to live with Lyme disease and enjoy good health using some excellent natural products and therapies. This website is provided to share what worked for me and provide you links if you would like to try these natural approaches for yourself.
